life around here

Well, I guess you can tell the California pictures didn’t happen today.  Maybe that’s because there are about 200 photos to sort through!  Maybe tomorrow?  Hopefully tomorrow.

In the meantime, here are some snapshots from our lives this week.

The big news is that I’m knitting for food now!  I have four orders in for knit-by-Becca Christmas presents and another three orders pending.  I’m over the moon.  There’s still room for more, so send me an email to beccagarber@gmail.com if you’re interested in a hand-knit Christmas present for a loved one.  Here are some photos of Lena exploring my latest project: a pair of silk-and-merino fingerless gloves.

I was walking by Lena today with my camera and saw her standing up for the first time!  After calling for Elliott to “quick, come look at this!” I snapped a fuzzy picture.  She had knocked Settlers of Catan off the shelf and then thought it was just the right height for her.

We’ve been going on a beautiful walks along the river in the evening, as usual.

My hair has a new secret.  It’s called Aveda Institute, a national beauty school.  Today for $20 I received a luxurious haircut with a senior student (11 months into her program and 1 month away from working at a high end salon).  She even gave me a head and hand massage as part of the package!  I felt so pampered and got a great haircut.  Find a school near you!
I love this photo.  I took it while looking back at the embankment and path on the opposite side of the river.  This dad was amazing: two daughters on bikes, a kid in a jogging stroller, and he was wearing roller blades.
This dad is even more amazing, though, I think.

One more snack (oatmeal and yogurt, mmm) before bath time!

budget baby

Isn’t this outfit gorgeous?  I looked up the company that made it and discovered this little romper is “hand-sewn and exquisitely hand embroidered.”  It seemed almost too lovely for a baby to wear.

I guess the person that gave it to me also thought it was too pretty to actually put on a baby.  The person who gave it to me second-hand (in a garbage bag full of clothes) had never taken this little romper off of its hanger.  It hung there, starched and perfect, with a matching dress for Lena to wear when she’s a little older.

What? you say.  A garbage bag full of clothes?

Believe it or not, most of Lena’s clothes have come from garbage bags of hand-me-downs.  In fact, thus far in Lena’s life, Elliott and I have purchased a grand total of… one… outfit for her.  One

This is not because we necessarily want to.  I walked into Baby Gap the other day and caught my breath, amazed at the darling little clothes surrounding me, the potential to take out my credit card and purchase a miniature shearling jacket or a tiny rosette-festooned sweater or my favorite thing of all: a ruffle-bottomed little sleeper.

But we haven’t purchased much at all.  We have instead been grateful for many welcome, baby! gifts of clothing from friends and family (thanks, Aunt Eden, in particular, for your hipster contributions for little L!) and gigantic bags of freebies from my Capitol Hill moms’ group. Our beautiful stroller, car seat, and baby carriers were all gifts, as were the spoons we use to feed Lena, the pacifiers we put in her mouth, the washcloths and soap we use in her bath, and the sheets on her crib mattress.

Frankly, finances are tight these days.  We’ve had to make a concerted effort to save our pennies and say “no” to our [well, my] longing to purchase clothing that Lena will wear for a grand total of two months.  I’ve also learned to say no to a lot of little flourishes (like these darling bows) or have found ways to make what we have stretch to cover new needs as they arise.

And so on this blog you won’t see a baby dressed in all the latest trends, unless those came in a bag of giveaways or were a gift.  Lots of mommy bloggers take delight in dressing their babies, and I am definitely one of them.  I love dressing up my cute baby girl!  But on this blog most of the clothing we wear is well-worn or secondhand, and most of the adventures we take are free or budget-conscious, and most of the meals we eat are cooked at home or are picnics in pretty places.  We take neither pride nor shame in this fact, since it’s just who we are right now, and probably who we will be for most of our lives.  We value thrift and simplicity.  We value the small things as we dream big!

a weekend with the Greens

Over the long weekend at home in Virginia we stayed at my parents’ house.  That house was full of joy and people that weekend with my grandparents in town from St. Louis and my sisters home from the University of Virginia.  My mom cooked up a feast on Saturday night and everyone came home for supper.

My sister Booie… er, Julia (those childhood nicknames!) made phenomenal chocolate torts with jam and fresh raspberries for dessert.  I think I had three!

Lena got so much sibling love.

Snuggles from two (of her three, counting Elliott’s side) UVA aunties.

And so much love from her Grammie and her GG (Great-Grammie).  Lena’s rocking on all fours these days, ready to crawl!

Emily Ericson, a friend of ours who lives in our basement, came up to do a family photo shoot later that evening.  We’re all together… Elliott’s back from deployment, Lena is born, the girls are back from school, Eric came by for dinner, and my grandparents are visiting.  Quite a feat!

The next morning, while my wonderful hubby let me sleep in, he and Lena visited with my grandparents before church.  Lena’s wearing the dress my mom and I made for her before she was born.

My favorite!

Four generations of Palmer women.  I remember taking a picture like this when I was about 10 and my GG was still alive.  Now it’s Lena’s turn!
