Making Room’s first giveaway!

Now that fall has officially begun (yay!), I thought we could kick off the season with something warm, snug, and free! I’m giving away a pair of fingerless gloves from my Etsy shop Making Room {Handmade}. I’ve sold several pairs of these gloves over the past year and everyone loves them. I find they’re great for texting, typing, driving, and wearing indoors or out. These will make a beautiful gift for your mom, sister, best friend, girlfriend, wife… or even yourself!

Here’s a description of the gloves from my shop’s webpage:

adding pieces to my Etsy shop

This weekend Elliott and I were able to finally take some photos of several items I’ve been working on for my Etsy shop. Working on items to sell has given my favorite hobby a new sense of purpose. It’s also been fairly easy to work on these projects while reading, chatting with Lena as she plays, watching a movie with Elliott, or gazing into the crackling fire. I want to expand beyond knitting as the weather changes, but… well, folks, it’s still winter. Even in Sicily. For awhile yet I’ll be wrapping my fingers up in warm wool as I turn a length of yarn into a lovely handmade garment or two.

a few photos from Thanksgiving

Here’s a fun batch to begin with!

Before Lena’s Uncle Jonathan proposed to Lena’s soon-to-be Aunt Erika (!!!), he practiced his proposal for Lena. She loved it all, including trying on the diamond ring.

I took some photos of my first completed order for Making Room {Handmade}, a pair of knitted fingerless gloves that my mother-in-law requested for a co-worker.

Lena’s pulling herself up on everything these days. She loved climbing up onto the hearth this Thanksgiving… under careful supervision!

Meanwhile, Jonathan proposed and Erika accepted! Their faces hurt from smiling, but they tried to smile a little more for a loooot of photos at the Garber household. Elliott popped the cork off a bottle of champagne and we toasted to their lives together. Congrats, you two!

They had to smile for many, many photos that evening.

That Thanksgiving weekend Jess had an inflamed tibia after running a half marathon. She tried to stay off it… sometimes more successfully than others…

Thanksgiving Day came at last! The table was set…

… and the guests arrived, all admiring of little Lena.

An after-dinner walk to work off some of those calories. Lena is already an avid frisbee “player,” and her daddy rejoices!

another little update

Well, folks, still no internet in our house! I wish I knew when that would change, but unfortunately there’s some issue with the Italian phone company that would install our internet. And so we wait. Hopefully tomorrow I can bring my laptop onto base and upload some pictures. Still so many good ones to share from Thanksgiving!

We’ve been working so hard on our house and it’s really starting to look more like home. There’s lots of odds and ends and lots of photos/artwork just lying around, so the real settling in will be to organize all those little things. Lena’s adjusting well and adds so much brightness to every day. Right now she’s crawling around the library in little mini jodhpurs, a Nordic-style sweater, and little fur-lined boots. The advantages of discovering a box of baby clothes!

I’ve been knitting busily for my knitting business and am ready to mail a couple big orders. Yesterday I uncovered our Pride and Prejudice DVD (the BBC version, of course) and might have watched about 4 hours of it while knitting a very long and lovely scarf. Photos to come of the completed projects, too!

life around here

Well, I guess you can tell the California pictures didn’t happen today. Maybe that’s because there are about 200 photos to sort through! Maybe tomorrow? Hopefully tomorrow.

In the meantime, here are some snapshots from our lives this week.

The big news is that I’m knitting for food now! I have four orders in for knit-by-Becca Christmas presents and another three orders pending. I’m over the moon. There’s still room for more, so send me an email to beccagarber@gmail.com if you’re interested in a hand-knit Christmas present for a loved one. Here are some photos of Lena exploring my latest project: a pair of silk-and-merino fingerless gloves.

I was walking by Lena today with my camera and saw her standing up for the first time! After calling for Elliott to “quick, come look at this!” I snapped a fuzzy picture. She had knocked Settlers of Catan off the shelf and then thought it was just the right height for her.

We’ve been going on a beautiful walks along the river in the evening, as usual.

My hair has a new secret. It’s called Aveda Institute, a national beauty school. Today for $20 I received a luxurious haircut with a senior student (11 months into her program and 1 month away from working at a high end salon). She even gave me a head and hand massage as part of the package! I felt so pampered and got a great haircut. Find a school near you!

I love this photo. I took it while looking back at the embankment and path on the opposite side of the river. This dad was amazing: two daughters on bikes, a kid in a jogging stroller, and he was wearing roller blades.
