“We haven’t gone to get gelato yet,” Elliott said randomly over dinner the other night. “The gelateria has been open for the season for a few weeks now.”
My ears perked right up. He was talking about gelato? In our house, I am definitely the sweets person. This was wonderful!
“Would you like to walk there after dinner?”
“Ummm… sure!”
The gelateria in our town is just a 10-minute walk from our house. This, in my experience, is just the right distance to digest your dinner, take in the town, and prepare your taste buds for the deliciousness ahead. The owner and his wife know us after our frequent daily trips there with our many visitors last summer. If you’ll pardon my pun, life just seems sweeter in this cold world when you’re friends with the owner of a gelateria.
^^^ Pistachio and chocolate, my old standard.
This last photo is from Instagram, so the quality isn’t the best, but it was too good not to share. At first Lena was distraught that she didn’t get her own cone, but when she saw how liberally we shared with her, she changed her strategy. The child ate more gelato than dinner that night!
Do you have a favorite ice cream store — or, if you’re lucky, a gelato shop — in your town? What’s your favorite flavor? Once I’ve gotten my fill of pistachio and chocolate, I like to move on to pure Nutella gelato… it’s life changing.
this looks wonderful. love the picture of Lena having a bite.
we’ve got a lack of good ice cream in this country, I’m sorry to say. it usually tastes very artificial and has texture problems because of melting/refreezing during power cuts. BUT a few months ago we discovered that there is a great French bakery downtown that has amazing artisan breads, pizza, and delicious, delicious sorbet and ice cream. last time I was there I got lime and blood orange. it was blisteringly hot out and the sorbet was exactly what I wanted. such a great treat. : )
Blood orange was my favorite flavor at Splendora’s on the Downtown Mall, Sarah. :-) I can’t imagine anything more delicious on a blistering hot day!
YUM. There is a restaurant here that serves gelato, but it’s nothing compared to authentic Italian! Lemon is my favorite. :)
Elliott always gets lemon. :-)
I am so very jealous! I have such fond memories of the gelato in Italy. We do have a place that serves it here, but somehow it just isn’t the same!
Some years ago an Italian gelatteria opened in my hometown, and it is so much better than regular ice-cream (except for the tangerine and basil my mom makes sometimes)! I love stracciatella and mint with chocolate chips. Extra fresh and chocolatey!
Tangerine and basil! I need to meet your mom!
I would be at that gelateria every day- looks delicious! That will have to be on our list of things to do when I come visit–which I hope is very soon! I would pick melon and chocolate =)
Pleeeease come soon! Can’t wait to show you around everywhere!
This looks delicious, and the Nutella gelato sounds amazing. There actually is a gelateria here in our town, but we’ve never tried it. I think we might have to do that this weekend. :)
Let me know if you do, Carrie! So hard to choose the right flavor… too many good choices.
Just catching up with your blog now! And eeps GELATO. (totally drooling over here!)
Oh, what a nice post! And beautiful photos. We also have a special ijsshop with delicious Italian ice cream. But we have not yet taken our first ice cream … You give me an idea. Thanks!
We live in Tunisia, where they have a lot of Italian influence. My favourite gelato shop is also not far from home, they make the best artisanal gelato in our town, in my opinion. I always go for the ‘Caramel au beurre salé’which is salty caramel, my hubby loves their ‘chocolat noir’ dark choc. Our daughter normally chooses colours haha and our son, has bits and bites from us since he is still young :) I love reading expats blog and yours is very interesting!
Nadine
Oh my goodness… they do not have salted caramel gelato here and it sounds amazing! Sometimes I’m surprised by the flavors that are available elsewhere (blood orange gelato, for instance) that I have never seen in Italy, even in large cities like Rome and Venice.
